1. Who we are

2. What data we collect
We collect minimal data to operate the service:
- Browser extension signals — when you visit a supported shopping site, the extension sends the page domain, a hashed page URL, and product metadata (name, price, category) to our API to compute a CO₂e estimate. We do not collect your full browsing history.
- Footprint Protocol detections — if a seller has published
fp:meta tags, we log the domain, hashed URL, and the disclosed CO₂e value for research purposes. - Impact events — when you click a greener alternative we record the CO₂ saving anonymously (no user ID, no IP address stored).
- Affiliate clicks — if you click an affiliate link we record the destination domain and a timestamp. No personal data is attached.
- Search queries — catalogue searches are logged transiently to return results; they are not stored against any identity.
3. Affiliate links
Some product links on Right Choice — including links in the browser extension banner and in the catalogue — may be affiliate links. When you click an affiliate link, the retailer may set cookies on your browser and share a commission with us if you purchase. We do not receive your name, email, or payment details from retailers.
Affiliate relationships have no influence on carbon scores or the ranking of recommendations.
4. Cookies and tracking
The Right Choice website itself uses no analytics cookies or third-party trackers. Affiliate partner websites you visit through our links may set their own cookies, governed by their own privacy policies.
5. How we use the data
- To return carbon footprint estimates and greener alternatives
- To display aggregate impact statistics on the homepage (total CO₂ saved)
- To improve the accuracy of our estimation models
- To operate and debug the service
We do not sell data to third parties. We do not build individual user profiles.
6. Data retention
Estimation logs are retained for up to 12 months for model improvement, after which they are deleted or anonymised. Aggregate impact statistics are retained indefinitely.
7. Your rights
Because we do not link any data to an identified person, most standard data-subject rights (access, erasure, portability) do not apply in practice — there is no personal record to retrieve or delete. If you believe we hold identifiable data about you, contact us and we will investigate.
8. Changes
We may update this policy at any time. Continued use of Right Choice after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
